Sleep is more than simply rest—it’s our body’s natural reset button. Yet, in today’s fast-paced world, quality sleep is often one of the first things we sacrifice.
I know this from personal experience.
When we don’t get enough quality sleep, the effects can reach far beyond feeling tired the next day. Our concentration suffers, our mood can change, our immune system can be compromised, and over time, consistently poor sleep can have a significant impact on our overall health and wellbeing.
My Journey Towards Better Sleep
After nearly 30 years in the corporate world, I learned the hard way that constantly pushing myself, working long hours and burning the candle at both ends eventually catches up with you.
For years, I thought being tired was simply part of a busy life. I would push through, get on with things and tell myself I would catch up on sleep later.
But when I transitioned into wellness, I began to understand just how important sleep is—not only for feeling rested, but for allowing the body and mind to recover, repair and reset.
I realised that sleep wasn’t a luxury or something I could simply fit in when I had time. It was a fundamental part of my health.
That changed the way I approached my evenings and my sleep.
I made restorative sleep a non-negotiable part of my own routine, and these are some of the things I put in place to help improve my sleep:
- Set a cut-off time: I try to stop stimulating activities such as work, scrolling and other screen time in the evening. I also avoid caffeine later in the day.
- Create a calming bedtime ritual: A warm bath or shower, a calming cup of tea, reading, or simply slowing down helps signal to my body that it’s time to transition from the busyness of the day to rest.
- Journal: Taking 10 minutes to write down my thoughts, worries, things I need to remember, or even what I’m grateful for helps clear my mind. Instead of taking all those thoughts to bed with me, I can put them down on paper and let them go.
- Optimise my environment: I keep my bedroom cool, dark and quiet. Creating an environment that feels peaceful and comfortable makes a real difference to how easily I settle.
- Support my body naturally: Stress, busy schedules and the demands of modern life can all interfere with our natural sleep patterns. I’ve also explored natural ways of supporting my body, including supplements, as part of my overall wellness routine.
Most importantly, I’ve learned that good sleep isn’t something we should only think about when we’re struggling to sleep. It needs to be part of our everyday approach to health.
For me, prioritising sleep has become one of the foundations of looking after myself—and it’s something I now encourage my clients to take seriously too.
Because wellness isn’t just about what we eat or how much we exercise.
It’s also about how well we rest, recover and allow our bodies to restore themselves.
Sleep is not a luxury. It is part of the foundation of true wellness.
